My crossover shifter dilemma is not unique. Back in 1975, when new Federal regs required left-side shifting, a lot of small foreign manufacturers had to scramble to adapt their existing bikes to be legal in the U.S. Here are some of the crossover shifting arrangements I’ve been drawing inspiration from.

Moto Morini had at least two different versions, both behind and in front of the engine:

Laverda used a slotted eye rather than splines on the end of the shift shaft:

Bultaco also did something similar on the late Metralla GTS and Matador bikes that had enclosed rear chains:
